I DID NOT, IN FACT, take Chaz. It wasn’t my fault. Louise had set up the appointment with her husband late the following afternoon. Chaz had a prior engagement and couldn’t come. Hale had already left for the club. I could have asked James, but I felt I could get more information out of Mr. Pennyfather if it was just me. After all, I could call upon my feminine wiles when needed.

“What time will you be home, m’lady?” Maddie asked as she helped me shrug on my new spring green swing jacket. “I only ask because I don’t want your supper getting cold.”

“You’re not cooking, are you?” I asked, aghast. Since Maddie wasn’t much of a cook, I often dined out or ate with my Aunt Butty. Simple meals were thrown together from Fortnum and Mason hampers or trips to Harrods’ Food Hall or the occasional time when Aunt Butty’s cook—who everyone simply referred to as “Cook”—took pity on me and sent me home with mounds of food.

“Of course not.” Maddie tutted. “You ought to know better. I don’t have the time to muck about in the kitchen. Your aunt’s cook made some meals for you. Says you don’t eat enough.” She snorted as she gave my voluptuous figure a once over.

“Don’t make me fire you,” I warned.

She snorted again. “As if.”

“Very well,” I huffed. “I can’t imagine this will take long. I should be home within a couple of hours.”

I hurried down the steps and into my car, which purred to life when I started it up. Marvelous invention, the automobile.

Horns honked and tires squealed as I pulled out onto the street with barely a glance. Really, people ought to watch more closely. It was a lovely afternoon, and I enjoyed the brief drive to the address in Mayfair Louise had given me. Only when I reached the street, it was blocked off for some sort of road works. The address I needed was on the other side of the block. I could park here and walk or pull down the side street and around the block. Less walking that way. Around the block it was!

Turning right, I drove carefully down the narrow street when an elderly man stepped right in front of me. I slammed on the brakes, my heart thumping wildly in my chest. I waved at him to carry on, but he stood there in the middle of the road, staring at me from beneath his battered fedora like a country bumpkin.

Finally, I rolled down the window and stuck my head out. “Hullo! Do be a darling and move out of my way, please. I’m in a bit of a hurry.”

He stared some more. Was he hard of hearing?

I heaved a sigh. “I say, is everything alright?”

Nothing. Just a blank stare. It was odd though. I’d thought him to be an old man based upon the bushy gray hair sprouting from beneath his hat and the matching mustache and beard that went halfway down his chest, but his skin was remarkably unlined.
